I'm so happy to share some insights and stories from the recent Money Mindset: Bookkeeping event that happened on a drizzly, cozy evening at the beginning of June. About 40 people came together to connect with each other, have some food+drink and hear from our three panelists about all things money, how to make more of it (and feel good about it!) and the nitty gritty details of how to keep our books in order. Katie Condon is a bookkeeper who specializes in small to medium-sized businesses including sole proprietors, incorporations, and non-profits. Meg Craig is a creative director and brand strategist who owns Skysail Brand and Hailey Thompson is the owner of Here no There, a home decor and gift shop in Mahone Bay. Katie started the discussion off with the story of how she became a bookkeeper - from a stay at home mom to a successful business owner who empowers others to take control of their businesses by understanding their money and bookkeeping. She encouraged everyone to keep their personal and business separate - from the beginning, if possible - so that you have a very clear story of what money is coming and going. She also said to get an accountant that you can build a relationship with - someone who has your back and can advise you as your business grows.
Meg and her team at Skysail Brand are really big on women making money and fighting the stigma that comes along with making it...and feeling empowered to do so. She also shared that when you hire employees, you need to create an open and honest dialogue about money and expectations from day one. Meg believes that everyone has worth and it's up to you as a leader to foster that and encourage growth personally and professionally. Money doesn’t have to be a dirty word. Especially as women we need to lift each other up and support each others success. The more money we make, the more positions of power and influence we gain and that gives us strength! - Meg Craig Running a business can be absolutely thrilling one moment and completely stress-inducing the next...especially the month your taxes are due! Hailey shared with us a bit about the mental health side of bookkeeping and how scary/overwhelming that can be. Feeling like every letter from the CRA was going to tell you that you are off to jail, because you have done everything horrendously wrong, is a thought many business owners have. Hailey talked about how after months of therapy, finding a great bookkeeper/accountant and implementing excellent online accounting tools (don't be afraid of changing your current system!), she can now open those light brown envelopes with ease. The big take-away? Ask for help. - Hailey Thompson This event wouldn't have been possible without our incredible sponsors - thank you!
